What this work is, and what it isn't

Coaching, skills training, and therapy
are not the same thing

This is not therapy.

Leigh Germann

I spent more than thirty years in clinical mental health settings, working with people through anxiety, depression, and trauma. That training is why I understand nervous systems the way I do, and it is a real part of why you can trust what I teach.

But everything I offer here, the podcast, the workshops, the membership, Calm and Confident, and personal resilience coaching, is education and skills training. It is not therapy, and I do not step into a clinical role inside it. Keeping the two kinds of work separate protects you, and it protects the quality of each one.

The difference, side by side

What I do here

Teach practical, brain and body based skills

Explain how stress, emotions, and your nervous system actually work

Help you apply those skills in ordinary situations at home

Offer structure, guidance, accountability, and encouragement

Work with you as a skills trainer, educator, and coach

Focus on learning and practice, forward into your life

What therapy does

Assesses and diagnoses mental health conditions

Treats those conditions clinically, over time

Works with trauma, grief, and clinical symptoms directly

Keeps a clinical record, and can sometimes bill insurance

Creates a therapist and client relationship, with everything that carries

Is regulated by state licensing boards and clinical standards of care

Both are valuable. They are simply built to do different jobs, and a lot of people need both at different points in their lives.

What we focus on together

Every skill is taught in a structured, practical way, with the emphasis on real life.

Emotional regulation

Nervous system awareness and stress response

Noticing your thought patterns and choosing your response

Practical self-care that supports your energy and resilience

Clear decision making that matches your values

Calm, steady leadership in your home and your relationships

This work is not about fixing you. You are not broken. It's about learning how stress affects your body, your thoughts, and your behavior, and building the tools to respond the way you actually want to.

When therapy is the better answer

Sometimes what a woman needs is clinical care, and no amount of skills training substitutes for it. If something comes up that calls for assessment or treatment, significant depression, trauma symptoms, or severe anxiety, I will tell you plainly and suggest you seek out a mental health professional.

Even though I am qualified to provide therapy, I will not move into a clinical role inside a coaching or skills training relationship. That separation is not a technicality. It keeps the coaching relationship clear, and it means you always know which role I am in.

Things worth knowing

I am a mandated reporter

Because I hold a professional license, certain obligations apply to everything I do, coaching and skills training included. If I become aware of suspected child abuse, elder abuse, or intent to harm yourself or someone else, I am legally required to report it to the appropriate authorities. This is not something I go looking for. It's a responsibility I have to uphold if it comes up.

Nothing here is a diagnosis or a treatment plan

Podcast episodes, workshops, membership calls, course modules, community posts, and anything else I put out are educational. None of it is clinical advice, and none of it should take the place of a professional who knows the facts of your particular situation.

Working with me does not create a clinical relationship

Joining the membership, buying a workshop, taking Calm and Confident, or participating in personal resilience coaching does not create a therapist and client relationship between us, and it should not be understood as creating one.

My clinical work and my coaching stay separate

Courses, recorded workshops, and the membership are open to everyone. One to one coaching and the live Calm and Confident cohort work differently. If you have been my therapy client, I don't take you on as a coaching client. If you are my coaching client, I don't become your therapist. Keeping those two kinds of work separate is how we make sure you are getting the right kind of support.

You will always get this in writing

Before we begin one to one work, you will receive a written coaching and skills training agreement that lays out the distinction between this work and therapy, the scope and limits of what we do, our roles, my reporting obligations, and how we communicate.

To say it as simply as I can

I am a therapist by training, but I am not your therapist.
I am your skills trainer, your guide, and your coach in building resilience and steadiness.

If you are not sure which of my offerings is the right starting point, write to me and I will point you to one.
