157. How to Listen So the People You Love Feel Truly Heard

Do you ever finish a conversation with someone you love and realize you were already forming your answer while they were still talking? I do it too. It is one of the most human things we do, and it is also the reason so many of the people in our homes do not feel heard.

In this episode, I look into what listening actually is, and why it is so much harder with the people closest to us than with anyone else. We walk through six habits that quietly close the door on a conversation, and I will tell you which one is my own. Then we get practical: three things you can do in your next conversation that change how the other person experiences being with you.

If your child has gotten quieter, or your partner has stopped bringing things to you, this one is worth your time. Listening is a skill, not a personality trait. It can be learned, and what it repairs is often bigger than the conversation you are in.

What you will learn in this episode

  • Why most of us listen to respond rather than to understand, and why the people we love can feel that difference even when our intentions are good
  • What is really happening when someone in your family gradually stops telling you things, and why it is almost never about love
  • What Carl Rogers found about the single most powerful thing you can offer another person, and the simple experiment he suggested trying in your next disagreement
  • Three places to begin: staying one moment longer, reflecting the feeling before you fix anything, and noticing the pull to leave a conversation internally
  • Why listening is a learnable skill rather than a personality trait, and what changes in a family when one person starts practicing it
